The specialists at EnviroFALK develop reverse osmosis systems, also commonly known as RO systems, which are perfectly tailored to a wide variety of applications. Demineralized water produced by these systems is required both for industrial processes and for use in hospitals, laboratories, and medical technology.

How Reverse Osmosis Works – RO Principle
Reverse osmosis relies on the process of osmosis, which we observe in nature, for example, when cherries burst after summer rain. The cherry contains a concentrated solution—its juice—while the rainfall represents a diluted solution. The cherry skin acts as a semi-permeable membrane, equalizing the concentration by allowing solvent (water) to pass into the cherry. The system strives for a balance between the two concentrations. Since the cherry’s volume is limited, pressure builds up—the so-called osmotic pressure. In nature, this pressure causes cherries to burst. Reversing this principle is the working mode of a reverse osmosis system: Pressure is applied to the concentrated solution to overcome its osmotic pressure. The pure solvent passes through the membrane, while all dissolved constituents remain on the concentrate side.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filter (RO)

Reverse osmosis—also referred to as RO—is a membrane process that retains both ions and particulate matter in water, thus reversing the natural process of osmosis. In RO systems, the saline feed water (e.g., softened municipal water) passes through spiral-wound semi-permeable membranes under pressure. Only pure water (the solvent) permeates the membrane and is collected as ‘permeate’ with very low salt content. All other water components are concentrated and discharged into the sewer with a separate waste stream, known as ‘concentrate.’
