The LECO C230 Carbon Analyzer is a microprocessor-based, software-controlled instrument for measuring the carbon and sulfur content in metals, ores, ceramics, and other inorganic materials. The C230 utilizes an induction furnace and measures carbon via infrared absorption.

The infrared source (IR) consists of a nichrome wire that is heated to 8500°C by resistance heating. The IR source emits visible energy as well as all wavelengths of the infrared spectrum. Carbon dioxide is used for descriptive purposes; the same principle applies to sulfur detection. Carbon dioxide absorbs IR energy at a specific wavelength within the IR spectrum. Energy from the IR source is absorbed as the gas passes through the cell, preventing it from reaching the IR detector.

An IR cell is used as both a reference and a measuring cell. Total carbon in the form of carbon dioxide is continuously and simultaneously detected. The initial reference level or baseline for the detector is set by purging the cell with oxygen to expel any residual atmospheric gases.
