SETRA SG 221 HDS/Einzelstück/Messebus/Infobus

This SG 221 HDS was initially intended for shuttle service to Southern Europe, but remained a one-off prototype. Nevertheless, it essentially served as the basis for two further exceptional high-deckers: the S 215 HDS and the S 216 HDS, with which Kässbohrer soon attracted many new customers. Moreover, this coach introduced the "S" designation, standing for "Super", as these new high-deckers truly lived up to their name: with an overall height of 3.63 metres, the elevated passenger compartment enabled even more space – accommodating more luggage (16 cubic metres) and additional service installations. Even extra fuel tanks posed no problem.

Regardless of which of the two Super-Setras the bus operator chose, the technically fascinating aspect of these two new models from Ulm was the fact that, apart from the front section, they were entirely constructed using Series 200 modular components, sharing identical bolting patterns with other Setra touring coaches. The 216 HDS could accommodate up to 16 seat rows. In direct comparison, the underfloor cockpit version offered even more space.

With the Setra SG 221 HDS, Kässbohrer had a vision, but the prohibition on operating articulated touring coaches in transit through France led the Ulm-based manufacturer to rethink in favour of single coaches. The SG 221 HDS henceforth served as a demonstration and information bus at trade shows and conferences; with its generously equipped onboard kitchen, it became a meeting point for representatives and customers.
